Plumbing in Newcastle
Newcastle has a real mix: heritage terraces in the inner-east and Cooks Hill, mid-century weatherboard cottages through Hamilton and Mayfield, post-war brick veneer in Adamstown and Kotara, and newer apartments along the harbour and the beaches.
What that mix means for plumbing: anything in the inner-city pre-1950 housing stock probably has galvanised iron supply pipes that are reaching end of life. Galv goes brittle and pinhole-leaks before it bursts, so you often see staining on ceilings or in cabinets before you see a real flood. Newer apartments have PEX or copper and rarely have pipe issues, but the high-rise hot water common systems get sediment problems that affect individual units.
The Newcastle coastal air is no joke. Saltwater corrosion shortens the life of brass fittings, especially in homes within a kilometre of the beach. Outdoor taps, garden plumbing and any external pipework gets worn faster here than inland.
Most common Newcastle callout is a slow leak in an older terrace where the galv has finally given up. People usually know it’s been a problem for a while. We can patch or run a new section, depending on what the camera shows.
