Plumbing in Maitland
Maitland has some of the oldest housing in the Hunter, with substantial 19th-century building stock in West Maitland and Morpeth. East Maitland is largely post-war and modern.
Heritage homes in central Maitland frequently still have original clay sewer pipes that have outlived several owners. Tree roots are the constant enemy. If you’re in a pre-1900 home and you haven’t had your sewer line CCTV’d in the last five years, that’s a worthwhile $340 to know what’s going on.
Maitland also floods occasionally (the Hunter River does what it does) and that puts stress on stormwater systems. Backflow valves on sewer connections are a worthwhile upgrade for any heritage home that’s near the flood zone.
Half my Maitland calls are people who’ve just bought a heritage place and the building inspector flagged something. Most of it’s fixable. Some of it’s budget-territory. Either way I’ll tell you straight what you’re looking at.
