Plumbing in Charlestown
Charlestown grew up after WWII as Newcastle expanded south. Most of the housing dates from the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, with newer infill developments on subdivided blocks.
Galvanised iron supply pipes were standard in 60s and 70s builds. A lot of those are at end-of-life now. If you’re in Charlestown and your water pressure has dropped, or you’re seeing rust-coloured water first thing in the morning, the pipes are probably part of the story. Copper from the 80s is generally still good unless it’s been near aggressive soils.
Hot water systems installed during the 80s building boom are also now well past their expected lifespan. A lot of Charlestown homes are on their second or third hot water unit. That’s normal.
Charlestown is heaps of pre-emptive replacement work, galv supply pipes going pinhole, hot water units at 20 years old refusing to retire. If you wait for it to fail, it always fails at 2am.
